The Surprising Link Between Blood Sugar and Reflux

One of the most over the counter drugs used is an antacid. That means a lot of people have issues with reflux. But I’d also propose those with reflux are also struggling with blood sugar and probably don’t even realize it.

Common Misconceptions About Reflux

When we think of reflux, what usually comes to mind? Stomach discomfort, heartburn, GERD, and maybe even angina. Many people reach for antacids like Tums, Mylanta, or Pepto to alleviate symptoms. However, these are merely band-aid solutions. What’s worse, they can actually dilute or remove essential stomach acids, leading to further issues.

The Root Cause of Reflux

Most health symptoms have a root cause. Heartburn isn’t just a random occurrence; it often stems from deeper issues. For instance, not eating enough protein can result in low stomach acid, which is crucial for breaking down food and defending against pathogens. If you’re constantly popping antacids and find yourself frequently ill, it’s likely due to depleted stomach acid.

Hydration

Proper hydration is another critical factor for reflux and blood sugar. Both too little and too much water can affect stomach acid levels. Aim for a balanced intake – half your body weight in ounces of water daily.

Blood Sugar’s Role in Digestive Health

Our symptoms often manifest from the bottom up – constipation, diarrhea, IBS, gas, bloating, and even hormonal issues like perimenopause. The quality of your stomach acid impacts your pancreas, which in turn affects blood sugar regulation. When stomach acid isn’t optimal, it can’t trigger the pancreas effectively, leading to imbalances in glucagon, insulin, and amylase production.

The Domino Effect on Hormones

The pancreas plays a crucial role in managing blood sugar. Glucagon helps pull glucose into the body when needed, insulin manages blood sugar levels, and amylase aids in digestion. Poor stomach acid quality disrupts this process, affecting your entire system – from digestion to hormonal balance.

Simple Steps to Support Your Health

Supporting your stomach acid and, consequently, your blood sugar doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Increase Protein Intake: Protein is vital for producing stomach acid.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink an appropriate amount of water daily.
  3. Incorporate Bitters: Digestive bitters can stimulate stomach acid production. Ask for soda water with a squeeze of lemon and bitters as a non-alcoholic, health-supporting drink.
  4. Monitor Blood Sugar: Avoid consuming sugary snacks in isolation. Pair them with protein or healthy fats to balance blood sugar levels.

Understanding Medication Side Effects

Long-term use of antacids can lead to serious side effects, including mineral depletion, bone pain, digestive issues, urinary problems, blood pressure imbalances, and increased inflammation. It’s crucial to address the root cause of reflux rather than relying on these medications.

A Holistic Approach to Health

In our society, there’s immense pressure to look a certain way, often leading to unhealthy behaviors like leaning on medicines to give us instant gratification of our symptoms. True health is about nourishing your body, supporting your hormones, and managing stress. Remember, restrictive diets and quick fixes can do more harm than good. It’s about finding balance and addressing the root causes of your symptoms.

Our health is a complex, interconnected system. By supporting your stomach acid and blood sugar levels naturally, you can improve your overall well-being. If you’re struggling with reflux or any related symptoms, consider these natural approaches before reaching for over-the-counter medications.
