We’ve Been Asking the Wrong Question About Cholesterol

If I asked ten different people what they know about cholesterol, I would probably hear ten different answers.

“High cholesterol causes heart disease.” “My doctor says I need medication.”

“My cholesterol is over 200, so I’m worried.” Or, “my parents had high cholesterol, so I probably will too.”

Fear has become one of the loudest voices in conversations about heart health. One number on a lab report gets highlighted, and suddenly it feels like everything hinges on bringing that number down as quickly as possible.

After caring for patients for years, I’ve become convinced that we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking, “How do I lower my cholesterol?” I believe we need to start asking, “Why is my body raising cholesterol in the first place?” That one question changes everything.

Looking Beyond the Lab Report

Modern healthcare often focuses on managing numbers.

Lower the cholesterol, lower the blood sugar, lower the weight, lower the blood pressure, then we finally lower the risk.

Those goals aren’t necessarily wrong. Healthy lab values matter, healthy blood sugar matters and of course healthy cardiovascular function matters.

The problem comes when we stop asking questions after seeing an elevated number.

Every symptom has a story and every lab value is providing information, that said every adaptation your body makes is happening for a reason.

My job has never been to chase numbers it’s to understand why the body is responding the way it is so we can address the foundation instead of simply managing the outcome. That perspective completely changes the conversation.

Cholesterol Has an Important Job

Many people have been taught to think of cholesterol as something dangerous.

But reality looks very different.God designed your body to make cholesterol because your body actually needs it. Cholesterol plays an essential role in:

  • Producing hormones
  • Supporting healthy brain function
  • Making vitamin D
  • Building every single cell membrane in your body
  • Repairing damaged tissues
  • Maintaining healthy cellular communication

Take a moment to think about that. Every cell in your body depends on cholesterol.

Something this important can’t simply be labeled “bad.” That doesn’t mean elevated cholesterol should be ignored. Chronic elevation can certainly increase cardiovascular risk over time.

It does mean we need to understand why cholesterol is elevated before assuming cholesterol itself is the enemy.

Adaptation Is One of the Greatest Gifts God Built Into the Human Body

One of my favorite things about studying the human body is watching how brilliantly it adapts.

Your body is constantly protecting you, repairing, responding and constantly working to keep you alive.

When inflammation increases, blood sugar becomes unstable, and stress remains high, the body responds.

Many of those responses are protective in the short term, even if they eventually become problematic when the underlying issue never gets addressed. Elevated cholesterol can be one of those protective responses.

Instead of seeing an elevated cholesterol level as proof your body is failing, consider the possibility that your body may be trying to solve a problem.

That doesn’t remove the need to improve your health, it simply changes where we begin looking.

Stop Treating Your Body Like the Enemy

One of the saddest things I hear from women is the way they talk about themselves.

They feel betrayed by their bodies, angry, defeated and they assume their body is working against them.

I don’t see it that way, what’s happening is your body communicating. And the communication isn’t the problem but ignoring it is.

Once we stop fighting our bodies, we can finally begin listening to what they’re trying to tell us.

Listening creates understanding, understanding leads to better decisions and better decisions create lasting change.

The Foundation Matters More Than the Diagnosis

People often ask me what makes my approach different.

Yes, I’m trained in naturopathic medicine and yes I use functional medicine principles but what I really practice is what I call foundational medicine.

That means I keep asking “why” until we uncover the true foundation underneath the diagnosis.

High cholesterol isn’t the finish line, it’s the beginning of the investigation.

Why is inflammation present, why is blood sugar unstable, why are hormones struggling, why is energy depleted, why is the liver overwhelmed, and why are digestion and detoxification compromised?

Every answer brings us one step closer to solving the real problem instead of simply managing symptoms.

Foundations change everything. When the foundation becomes stronger, every system built on top of it becomes stronger too.

Stewardship Changes the Way We Think About Health

This is where my faith deeply shapes the way I practice medicine.

God entrusted each of us with an incredible body.

You or I didn’t create it but God did. Think about everything happening inside your body right now without you giving it a second thought.

Your heart is beating, your lungs are breathing, your nervous system is communicating and your digestive system is working.

Millions of cells are repairing and replacing themselves. That alone is remarkable.

Health stops feeling like another task on a never-ending to-do list when we begin viewing it through the lens of stewardship.

Stewardship simply means faithfully managing something that has been entrusted to us.

That perspective removes so much pressure.

Taking care of your body isn’t about earning God’s approval.

Taking care of your body becomes one way we honor the gift He has already given us.
