Breaking Free from Codependency: Why Self-Abandonment Isn’t Holy

The Silent Struggle No One Talks About

Codependency isn’t just about living with an addict. It’s about self-abandonment that masquerades as love. And it’s keeping countless Christian women exhausted, anxious, and sick. In this teaching, I’m unpacking what codependency really is, how it shows up in your body, and why it keeps you from healing—not only emotionally but physically.

What Codependency Really Looks Like

If you’ve ever…

  • Obsessed over someone else’s choices
  • Stayed silent to avoid conflict
  • Carried guilt for problems you didn’t cause
  • Lost sleep over someone else’s behavior

…you may be dealing with codependency.

At its core, codependency is self-neglect wrapped in the costume of concern. It’s the belief that your value is tied to keeping everyone else okay—even at the expense of yourself.

Codependency in the Body

This isn’t just emotional. Codependency creates physiological stress patterns that keep your body stuck in survival mode:

  • Tight chest when someone is upset
  • “Guilt gut”—that sick stomach feeling when you didn’t even do anything wrong
  • Sleepless nights replaying conversations
  • Chronic fatigue from scanning everyone else’s needs
  • Throat tightness when you want to speak but don’t

Physiologically, this is fight-or-flight mode. And here’s the truth: you can take all the supplements, detox, and protocols in the world—but if your nervous system is stuck in codependency, healing will not come.

The Myth of “Holy” Self-Abandonment

As Christian women, we’re often told to “die to ourselves” and “serve selflessly.” But hear me:

There is a difference between godly sacrifice and unholy self-abandonment.

Jesus never abandoned Himself. He rested. He withdrew. He said no. He invited—He did not control.

When we ignore our God-given needs, we aren’t being holy. We’re slipping into bondage.

Codependency and Identity Crisis

Codependency isn’t just a habit. It’s an identity crisis.

  • You lose your sense of self.
  • You don’t know what you want anymore.
  • You shape-shift to match the people around you.
  • You feel guilty for resting or taking time for yourself.

This is why the first step in my Wilderness of Wellness Success Path is identity work. Because without reclaiming who you are in Christ, you’ll keep circling the same cycles.

Steps Toward Freedom

1. Notice Where You Abandon Yourself
For three days, track the moments when you say “yes” instead of “no,” silence your voice to keep the peace, or neglect your needs to rescue others.

2. Practice Healthy Detachment
Loving people doesn’t mean managing their outcomes. As Melody Beattie says in Codependent No More:

  • I didn’t cause it.
  • I can’t control it.
  • I can’t cure it.

Your job is to steward yourself—not fix everyone else.

The Connection Between Codependency and Your Health

Codependency isn’t just relational—it’s physical.

  • Cortisol stays high.
  • Gut function shuts down.
  • Hormones crash.
  • Fatigue becomes your normal.

This is why so many women come to me saying, “I’ve spent my whole life making sure everyone else is okay—and now I’m not.”

Breaking Free with Support

You don’t have to stay stuck in these cycles. Inside The Wilderness of Wellness, women aren’t just losing weight and balancing hormones. They’re breaking free from generational patterns, reclaiming their voice, and living whole and free in Christ.

Healing is possible. You are not broken. You’ve simply been trained to disconnect from yourself. Now it’s time to come back. You were never meant to be everything for everyone. You were created to be whole, grounded, and free in Christ. Let’s stop normalizing codependency and start living in truth together.
