Welcome to the crying in my cheesecake podcast, where we are in pursuit of living life abundantly, not held back by our body size or symptoms, nor are we held back by our hurts, habits or other obstacles in life. Learn the secrets to crush it in your health, wellness, relationships, and spiritual life. I am Dr.

Danielle, your host and practitioner. And in this episode, we’re going to talk about quick fixes and how they are holding you back. This is something that is born out of something I experienced last week actually. So this patient came into my office and in fact this person was actually referred to me from another practitioner and I was asked to muscle test this person and just out of an abundance of love for my patients I’m like sure let me just go ahead and help you out whatever.

So this patient walks in and first of all I want to praise. Every single practitioner that refers out when something is out of our scope, out of our understanding. And when we refer out, that means that we have a trusted relationship with another practitioner who gets or gets it and understands that our limitations and it’s a sign of respect when we refer out.

So that is huge. I have a massive referral network of specific things for specific types of people that I refer out to and I love my relationships with my referral network. So this gal referred me. this practitioner referred me to this patient. I came in on Friday and I had another patient anyway. So I’m like, you know what, I’ll just pop this person in right before.

And I didn’t have a health history. I was just doing this as a favor. It wasn’t anything formal necessarily, but you know, if you’ve worked with me before, you know, I kind of just take everything to the formal. I say formal as in I treat very formally and I’m looking at the whole picture always. I can’t undo that from myself.

And I just lean into it. So the, the patient comes in and I look at her and something just, I, I didn’t know what I was supposed to be muscle testing for. I didn’t know, um, what I was supposed to be doing. So when I muscle test, I don’t ask the body anything. I’m, I know that there are some people in kinesiologists that ask the body things.

Um, I don’t do that. I literally hand a vial of something to you and I just let your body, like, either tell me it’s strong or it’s weak and what is actually going on. Like, that’s all I do. And, um, So I looked at the person and I’m like, okay, what am I supposed to be? Um, muscle testing for you. And then I was given what I was supposed to be muscle testing.

It was supposed to be dosing for a specific set of supplements. And I’m like, okay, so what is the rationale behind these supplements and what do you think that you need? And And it’s interesting to me that this person has been being treated since June and has had no results. And they’re constantly, the team around this, this patient, it has been constantly focused on gut health.

And don’t get me wrong, there is a space for gut health. I am currently working on my small intestine and my insulin resistance is under control. I’ve lost a bunch of weight because of it. And I know that there is a space for gut health, right? But there’s also a time and a place for that. And not always is that the first place we start and not always is that the place that we continue to start with someone who is very lean, very fit, very health conscious anyway.

And when I say health conscious, I mean, this person knows. that her gut is healthy. Like she has done the work for years and she’s like, she told me, she’s like, I really don’t think it’s that. And I, so I started asking her a line of questions and so forth. And I said, what would you say if I think it’s your liver is where we go next.

And then your brain is where we go third. And she’s like, that’s so interesting because I really thought it was my liver too. And I wonder if quick fixes Quick fixes can happen in any practitioner’s office. I’m not going to like just put down traditional medicine. There are its downfalls for traditional medicine because of numbers, games, and things like that.

I don’t believe it’s the practitioner’s fault. But even in other functional medicine or holistic health offices, there are quick fixes being employed because they don’t know the answer. So the answer must be in the gut and that’s not always the truth. And so this person was like yes Let’s you know, let’s let’s do this I’m like, you know what?

let me go ahead and muscle test and even see if your body wants or needs anything for your liver and sure enough it was and so I gave this person a Three month protocol where all she has to do is take a few supplements eat a few certain kinds of foods I always write prescription or not prescriptions protocols with the idea of food as therapy or therapeutics lifestyle things and then supplements if needed to help support the I don’t typically, most people that work with me do not get a vitamin or a mineral other than magnesium.

And that’s because I don’t, I believe that vitamins and minerals, just because you’re deficient in those, it doesn’t mean that you, that that’s what you, your body needs to be taking. Because if you live in the Western culture, You are likely getting these things from food even from ultra processed foods.

You’re likely getting these vitamins and minerals So my question is why are you not absorbing them or why are you expending them so quickly? What is actually going on? I’m always looking at the root cause and this last week. I was also at At my retreat virtually my Australian retreat virtually with my mentor Tracy Harris of mums with hustle And she used me as an example of something, of how, let’s be real, Danielle cannot stop getting to the root cause of something.

It’s physically and mentally and spiritually impossible for her to stop diving deep. And I’m like, that is so me, because I don’t want to. settle for, well, this is just how it is. I will not settle for that. And I will fight. And when I say that whole network that I have, my network spans across the globe.

My network expands with some massive professionals that I have access to that are well esteemed and well renowned in their areas. And it helps me. to feel confident that if I don’t know the answer, which honestly is quite often, I don’t always know the answer, but I do know someone that does. And that makes someone valuable.

So I say all of that to bring forth this idea that it is more and more I’m coming across women Specifically, men too, but they’re just not as vocal about it. Everyone that I’m coming across, I’m going to say everyone, because there’s always something, right? Is frustrated with their health and feeling like they’re stuck in this cycle of symptom management or prescription management.

And it’s so frustrating because it just feels like we have to look for the next quick fix. It’s frustrating. But for real, lasting change, there’s a shift in our mindset that has to happen. And in today’s episode, I’m going to break down why popular strategies, like popular health strategies, are often nothing more than crutches or holding you back from that true wellness that you deserve.

If you’re ready for a different approach, one that puts you in the center of your care, remember, And let’s keep listening, because let’s start with the first one. Here’s a very hard truth. The popular approaches out there, whether it’s a fad diet, a supplement stack, or a one size fits all exercise plan, those are usually just quick fixes.

They’re crutches. Sure, they might give you some temporary relief, but they rarely get to the root of what’s actually going on in your body. These quick fixes don’t change. The underlying patterns that keep your symptoms around and here’s why. Over and over, not here’s why. But that’s why people over and over keep coming to me saying, I’ve tried everything and nothing sticks.

Is that you? I remember so long ago, and it’s not even that long ago, it feels like so long ago, but I remember trying, and I have tears in my eyes thinking about it, trying as a young girl. Knowing that my body was big, I was told so many things like, Oh, you’re just big boned. Well, you know what? Bones don’t jiggle.

How is it that my friends, my cousin, whom I’m really close to, how is it that she can eat whatever she wants? And she looks different than me. How is it even to this day? She eats such a high carb, high sugar meal. And all like, she actually eats usually more than I do throughout the day. And yet she’s leaner than me.

How does that happen? And so, of course, out of desperation, I have tried, I feel like, all of the things. And so, I also know what it’s like to feel like I’ve tried everything and nothing sticks. So, what are some of the popular crutches that might be holding you back? Here is one. Jumping from diet to diet.

It seems like there’s this new miracle diet every month, am I wrong? These diets are often very restrictive. meant to be short term or use therapeutically, or quite frankly, they’re just idiotic and make no sense other than to get weight off of you. And they’re rarely tailored to what your specific body needs.

They keep you chasing temporary results rather than creating a sustainable lifestyle. Now, I’m going to be very honest here. When I started this business, I was a macro nutrition coach. And macros, I did customize to each person. But what happened was, is I would only say, you know, you need to eat more protein, you need to eat more fiber, you need to eat more of this.

But I wasn’t educated enough to know. What, why is that person having so much trouble sticking to this diet? Why is this person, that’s all macros are too. Macros are another form of dieting. Why is this person having, uh, having struggles sticking to this? Why are they craving this? Why are they so weak and running through the drive thru?

And I’m realizing, I would like, I know I was that person too, but I realized. That, that person was likely not being taught how to eat for their bodies, how to realize that it sometimes isn’t them. And sometimes it’s much deeper than just the food. Actually it is always much deeper than the food. Another thing that could be holding you back, another crutch that could be holding you back is over relying on supplements.

Now don’t get me wrong, supplements can be powerful tools, but if you’re just piling on pills. without knowing what your body actually specifically needs, they can be crutches instead of a cure. And I’m not going to say cure like, Oh my gosh, these supplements cure me because they don’t. Your body cures itself.

That’s, that’s just the underlying thing. But when you see your favorite influencer talking about ritual vitamins, or you see your influencer talking about this collagen, or you see them talking about this pink drink or whatever it may be, Or you hear on TV that omegas are so good for you. So you just go get omegas.

The nature’s vow is at nature’s Valley. No, that’s a granola bar. Nature’s main nature way, uh, at the grocery store while you’re there, not realizing that that oil is rancid. And then you pick this up and you’re like, okay, well, I feel better because you’re probably increasing your fats. Because you’re probably part of the low fat, no fat dieting that you know that you think is good for you When it actually isn’t and so you’re probably getting some fat so you might feel a little bit better But what you’re really putting in your body is rancid fats that turns into trans fats It actually creates more inflammation because you’re using a low quality low potency omega fish oil And you don’t even know what dosing you need, what kind you need.

Do you need omegas for, you know, for what is it? Do you need the kind of omegas that, because not always is more better and it can actually cause harm. Honestly, it can actually cause harm. And I know that at least for me, I always thought, Oh, well more is always better. That’s not always the case. But over relying on supplements can be a crutch as well.

Focusing only on symptoms. That’s a crutch. Focusing only on your symptoms. Many approaches out there are about managing your symptoms rather than the root causes. It’s like playing whack a mole when someone doesn’t realize the interconnectedness or pulling apart the different kinds of symptoms you’re having and realizing where those are coming from and maybe it’s from five different diagnoses or issues that you have.

And they’re treating you just for one thing, or they’re treating you for, well, you take this pill for this, you take this pill for that, you take this pill for this, and you take these things because of the side effects of these things. Like that, that is symptom management. That is not a root cause thing.

And then you think about, like, I think about just like my dad, and I’m like, he has so many medicines that are contraindicated together, so then he takes other medicines on top of that to help manage that. And then Over time, these medicines no longer work because that underlying symptom is, is not addressed.

Taking something to dull your pain or to cover up fatigue might help in the moment, but it doesn’t solve the real problem. So this weekend I thought it would be really cool and I’m like, Oh, you know what? Like the windows are open. I really want some false scent in the house. I’m going to go ahead and put the scentsy wax melts in my bathroom.

I haven’t used scented anything in my house in years. Years. And you’re going to find out why in just a minute and you may already know. So I put the scentsy doohickeys in my bathroom, uh, what do you call that? The bathroom melty thingy, okay? Melty thingy, that’s the technical term. Anyway, so I put my, uh, Wax melt on there and I wake up in the middle of the night with a nasty headache.

My eyes are matted shut and I’m like, dumb me, I’m like, Oh, I slept with my window open. It’s 40 some degrees outside. Okay. Well that may be true. There’s also another truth there. Your girl put fragrance in the house and I was focused on my symptoms of that headache. And I kept thinking it was my allergies.

So I went through, I’m like, well, what did I do? Do I need to go take an antihistamine? While I did, I needed to take an antihistamine because I messed everything up, but I created the root cause of that headache and migraine and cough and chest and the, uh, the chest tightness and the matted eyes. The root cause was the stupid sensei.

wax melts that I put in the bathroom. And so imagine this, uh, I take all, I use the little cotton thingy to take out the wax, the melted wax, I throw it away, open up all the windows in the house and I turn the fan on in the bathroom and we leave the house, I come back, we leave the house to go get fresh air and whatever, we come back and I breathe in.

And I know my headache is gone. Like it’s just gone after breathing fresh air for a few hours outside and then coming home the scent was out of the air and I felt better. The root cause was not my histamine problem. The root cause of that situation was not me leaving the window open and it’s the pollen and all of this other stuff.

The root cause was me putting the scentsy, uh, wax melts in the wax melt doohickey. And thinking I wanted the house to smell a certain way. When we are focused on our symptoms and not the root cause, it’s like me being dumb, putting, thinking that it was the window or the pollen or the, you know, that, um, harvest right now happening was the, was the cause and it actually wasn’t.

It was artificial fragrances in my air that were toxic. Causing my liver to struggle. So when I realized what it was originally, when I realized what it was, I went downstairs and I did a high dose of liver support to help flush the toxins from my body. I did the same thing for my kids, my husband, it doesn’t, he doesn’t like, he’s whatever, he didn’t even notice, which I thought was funny.

He didn’t even notice that there was scent in the air. Um, but. That is, that is a real life example that I can give you of what focusing on the symptoms versus root causes and how I think and how I approach things. All of these things that I was talking about, the jumping from diet to diet, over relying on supplements, focusing only on your symptoms, these things keep you in a loop, feeling like you’re doing everything quote unquote right, but not seeing the improvements you really want.

So, How do we break free from these quick fixes? You’re not going to like this answer because it’s going to sound simple, but also like way too much work and where do I go? I promise you, I am not going to be speaking to you in any kind of way that makes you think that you can have an easy access to health.

You have access to it, but health is not easy to achieve. Because you need to do hard work. You have to show up for yourself because no one’s going to do it. The hard work is not physically working harder. The hard work happens in your mind. Your mindset shift is essential because lasting health improvement isn’t about chasing the next big thing because that’s sexy and that’s exciting.

It makes you look like you’re doing so much. No, it’s about getting to know your body. Understanding what it needs and building a real relationship with your health journey. That shift means taking a long term view. Real change doesn’t happen overnight. And we say this all the time, but do you believe it?

Do you believe that real change doesn’t happen overnight? Because we are sold the two week cleanses and 30 day challenges. And we think that that’s going to fix us. We think that running to the gym and working out seven days a week is going to fix us. True health is about creating lasting habits and discovering the unique factors that affect your wellness, not everybody else’s.

There is no template for what wellness looks like.

We need to secondly, not just take a long term view, but secondly, be open to digging deeper. We have to look past the obvious, just like the obvious of my histamine response, my eyes matting shut, my migraine, my sinus pressure. Sometimes we have to look behind the, or beyond the obvious because chronic symptoms have underlying causes like hormone imbalances, gut health issues, lifestyle factors, food that you’re dealing with, stressors, all sorts of things.

Maybe it’s trauma from when you were a child and you don’t even know maybe there was trauma in the womb that you don’t Even know you don’t have a recollection of when you’re willing to dig deep You and I can get to the root cause and make real progress And the other thing we need to do the third thing we need to do is choose individualized care Your body is unique.

So why would you choose a cookie cutter approach? That cookie cutter approach is going to deliver or fail to deliver real results To truly understand and heal, you need care that’s tailored to you, not just another one size fits all. And now here’s where things get different because most healthcare experiences are transactional.

You show up, explain your symptoms, get a prescription, and you’re on your way. Or, if you go to a functional doctor, as much as I love them, you show up, explain your symptoms, get a supplement, and you’re on your way. But what if your healthcare wasn’t just about a list of symptoms? What if it was about you as a whole person?

And that’s where my concierge packages come in. When you work with me in a concierge package, it’s not about fixing a symptom or checking off a box. It’s about building a relationship with you, between you and me. You know, that’s what I love. I was thinking about, this is actually where this package came from because, or these packages came from, because I have a very, very high level.

package that I, it is a concierge package that includes some testing and so forth. And I’ve offered it for years and it sells out very, very quickly. And I’m like, why do I love that package so much? And it’s the people don’t get me wrong. I love, love, love my people. But it’s also the fact that I get to build a relationship with my patients.

You know, you’re not a number here. You’re a person with a story. A life and unique health needs, and when you work with me, we work together. one-on-One to truly understand what’s happening in your body, every appointment is a chance to get to know you better and help you create a life where you can feel your best.

What does concierge care look like practically? Because this may be new to you, this may be a new concept to you. So I want to let you know what you can expect from working with me in a concierge package. You can expect extended appointments where you never feel rushed. Our initial visit lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours, allowing us to cover every aspect of your health history, your lifestyle, your current concerns.

I get to do some assessments on you. Follow up appointments are longer too. So we can dig deeper and make real progress, change things when we need, personalize actionable plans. After each appointment, you’ll leave with clear, customized plan of action. There is nothing worse than going to a doctor and you knowing nothing when you leave.

You having no action steps when you leave other than go get your labs done and then I’ll see you next time. No, that doesn’t, that does not make sense. It’s time to demand better from our time. You have taken time away from work, from your kids, from your responsibilities. Every single appointment needs to matter.

Whether it’s dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, or specific testing, every step is designed to your unique health goals, but also actionable. You’re going to have action steps to take. You can also expect ongoing support because true healing isn’t a one and done thing. It’s not just a, you know, new patient package thing.

It’s not just a one thing. As your journey progresses, we are going to adjust, tweak, and improve based on how your body is responding. You get continuous support, guidance, and adjustments, and we’re always moving forward together. There’s also flexibility for my out of town patients. Yes, people do travel from all over the, uh, all over the country to actually work with me.

And if you’re considering it, know that we can create a customized plan that works for you as well. You can come in for an intensive visit and we’ll continue with virtual follow ups so you’re supported no matter where you are. But also if you are a virtual patient, I can still make that happen even if you don’t come in from out of town.

So just let me know, let’s talk about that because I do work with a lot of people from out of town. It’s, it is truly an honor. And one of the biggest things I hear from new clients and patients is that they want to be seen. They want to feel seen. They want to feel like their provider actually knows them and understands them and cares about their progress.

In my concierge packages, that’s exactly where, what we’re focused on. It’s all on you. It’s not about a list of symptoms or quick fixes. It’s about building relationships where you feel supported, empowered, and truly known. And when we work together, it’s not just an appointment. It’s a partnership. I don’t want to have authority or autonomy over you.

You have autonomy over yourself. You are the expert of your body. And my goal is to create a safe space where you can talk openly about your health concerns, your mental health, marriages, relationships, whatever, and know that I’m here to help you every step of the way. So if you’re ready to step off of the quick fix merry go round, my advice is to start now.

Real health transformation is possible, but it starts with a commitment to doing things differently. You don’t have to keep struggling with temporary solutions or feeling frustrated by the lack of results. With my concierge packages, you are choosing a personalized approach that goes deep so you can finally achieve lasting wellness.

And if you’re ready to experience healthcare that actually listens to you, understands you, and builds relationship with you, I invite you to book a spot in one of my packages. The spots are limited because I believe in giving each of my clients, or my patients, full attention. And I want to be there for you 100 percent as we work together to achieve your goals.

And I think that this is the key to what health and wellness looks like. Thanks for listening to the crying in my cheesecake podcast. I hope it encouraged you to make the next best step for your health. Take a look at the show notes for more information or other links I mentioned in the episode.
