Why the Holidays Feel So Heavy—And What No One Is Saying Out Loud
The holidays were meant to be a season of comfort, connection, celebration, and joy. Yet for so many women, they trigger the exact opposite—stress, shame, anxiety, emotional eating, sleep disruptions, bloating, exhaustion, and a feeling of being completely ungrounded.
As a naturopathic doctor and someone who has lived this cycle myself, I want to name what almost no one says out loud:
The holidays feel heavy because you’re not just walking into a room of people…
You’re walking into a room of old identities.
You return to roles you’ve outgrown—
the peacekeeper, the fixer, the strong one, the quiet one, the conflict-avoider, the “good girl,”
the one who smooths things over and keeps everyone else comfortable.
Your nervous system remembers the past before the turkey ever hits the table.
And when your nervous system feels unsafe, food becomes the fastest way to cope.
It’s not about discipline.
It’s not about willpower.
It’s not about “just saying no” to carbs.
It’s about physiology… and survival.
Why You Eat More During the Holidays (It’s Not What You Think)
Let’s get clear about what’s actually happening inside your body:
1. Stress + Cortisol = A Body That Feels Unsafe
When you enter a triggering environment, your cortisol spikes. Your brain is scanning for emotional threats, not lions—but your body doesn’t know the difference.
This leads to:
- emotional eating
- sugar cravings
- irritability
- fatigue
- late-night snacking
- disrupted sleep
- bloating
- anxiety
- mood dips
This is not lack of discipline.
It’s a dysregulated nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do.
2. Blood Sugar Chaos Makes Everything Worse
During the holidays, women often:
- skip meals
- graze all day
- rely on sugar for energy
- drink more alcohol
- abandon protein
- eat carbs without balance
- eat to “cope,” not to nourish
That sets off:
- cortisol spikes
- 2 AM wakeups
- inflammation
- weight gain
- hormone disruption
- emotional volatility
- gut issues
And January becomes a cliff we fall off, not a fresh start.
3. Old Family Patterns Trigger Old Coping Mechanisms
We revert to childhood roles faster than we realize.
Your body remembers:
- the comments
- the pressure
- the perfectionism
- the expectations
- the emotional labor
- the judgment
- the need to keep the peace
You’re not overeating because you’re hungry.
You’re overeating because you’re trying to feel safe.
A Story from the Clinic: Emily’s Holiday Transformation
Emily came to my clinic after years of gaining 8–12 pounds every holiday season.
Every January she did:
- Whole30
- extreme restrictions
- gym binges
- calorie cuts
- “start over Monday” cycles
She didn’t need quick fixes – her body was dysregulated.
So we regulated her blood sugar.
We supported her nervous system.
We gave her real strategy.
We built patterns she could live with.
And she went through the holidays:
- peaceful
- present
- without spiraling
- without starting over in January
She simply kept going.
That’s what real metabolic healing looks like.
This Is the Year You Stop the Holiday Shame Spiral
Here’s what you can do today:
1. Create Non-Food Anchors
Food can’t be your only grounding tool, create anchors like:
- a protein-rich breakfast
- stepping outside for a walk
- a 5-minute breathing reset
- removing yourself from triggering rooms
- a simple journal prompt
- a “go-to” phrase that grounds you
2. Know Your Patterns
Ask yourself:
- When do I start mindless snacking?
- Who triggers me?
- What emotions lead me to food?
- When do I check out?
- What role do I slip into around family?
Awareness is the true first step of healing.
3. Practice Micro-Moments of Gratitude
Not Pinterest quote gratitude.
Not the “write 3 things on a list” routine.
Genuine gratitude physiologically:
- lowers cortisol
- stabilizes the immune system
- supports digestion
- calms the nervous system
- anchors your body
It’s a metabolic practice, not a journal prompt.
4. Get into a Room Where You Are Supported
This season will not magically get easier.
But it can be different with:
- strategy
- coaching
- accountability
- regulated rhythms
- blood sugar support
- real emotional tools
- community
This is exactly why I’m opening 20 founding member spots inside The Wilderness of Wellness Explorers, at the lowest rate it will ever be.
This is the same framework I use in my clinic, but made accessible to your real life.
If you feel that nudge, email:

You Don’t Have to Numb Your Way Through Another Holiday Season
You can:
- stay grounded
- stay connected
- stop overeating
- protect your peace
- support your hormones
- stabilize your blood sugar
- feel like yourself again
This is the year you stop abandoning your body and finally listen to what it’s been trying to communicate for years.
You deserve to feel well—right now. Don’t wait until January 1st.
