I’m Not Attracted to My Husband Anymore—Is It Hormones or Something Deeper?

There’s a sentence women whisper to me in intake forms, in quiet clinic rooms, and sometimes through tears:

“I love my husband… but I’m not attracted to him anymore.”

And immediately after that sentence comes shame. Fear. Panic.
What does this mean? What’s wrong with me? Is my marriage doomed?

Let me say this clearly before we go any further:
You are not a bad wife. You are not broken. And this is rarely just about hormones.

What you’re experiencing is your body and heart signaling distress—and no one ever taught you how to read those signals.

Attraction Is Not a Moral Issue—It’s a Health Signal

Attraction is not proof of how much you love someone.
It’s not a measure of loyalty, character, or commitment.

Attraction is a barometer.

Just like hormones, libido sits at the tip of the iceberg. When attraction fades, it’s often reflecting deeper patterns happening inside your body, nervous system, emotions, and spiritual life.

In my world, attraction lives at the intersection of:

  • Hormonal communication
  • Nervous system safety
  • Blood sugar and cortisol regulation
  • Inflammation and pain
  • Emotional intimacy
  • Shame and body image
  • Exhaustion and depletion
  • Spiritual alignment

When one—or several—of these areas are off, desire is usually the first thing to disappear.

The Lie Women Believe About Desire

The first lie women believe is this:
“If I’m not attracted to him anymore, something is wrong with my marriage—or with me.”

What’s actually happening is often much simpler—and much deeper.

Your body doesn’t shut down desire randomly.
It shuts it down when you’re living in survival mode.

Pleasure is not essential for survival. Safety is.

The Four Physical Patterns That Quietly Kill Attraction

Before blaming hormones, these are the patterns I look for first:

1. Cortisol Flattening (Burnout)

When stress goes on too long—emotionally, physically, or spiritually—your cortisol doesn’t just run high. Eventually, it flatlines.

Burnout pulls energy away from libido because desire is unnecessary when your body feels unsafe.

2. Blood Sugar Instability

Chronic crashes, spikes, irritability, cravings, and shaky energy disrupt estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Blood sugar is the foundation of wellness.
When it’s unstable, desire suffers—every time.

3. Low-Grade Inflammation

Pain, bloating, headaches, joint issues, and tension numb pleasure pathways.

Even “manageable” pain steals energy your body would otherwise use for connection and intimacy.

4. Exhaustion Masquerading as Apathy

You don’t actually “not care.”
You’re depleted.

When capacity is gone, desire cannot exist.

Attraction requires capacity.

The Missing Piece No One Wants to Talk About: Resentment

Resentment kills desire faster than any hormone imbalance ever will.

Resentment builds when:

  • You carry everything alone
  • You feel unseen or unsupported
  • Your needs stay unspoken
  • Disappointment piles up
  • Emotional labor never ends
  • You’re mothered-out and touched-out
  • Faith and purpose feel misaligned

Resentment is depletion with a story.

And here’s the hard truth:

You cannot desire someone you subtly resent.

Nagging, complaining, constant irritation, and having nothing kind or fun to say are not personality flaws—they’re signs of buried resentment.

Three Places to Start Rebuilding Desire

1. Regulate Your Nervous System

Your body needs predictable rhythm:

  • Stable blood sugar
  • Consistent meals with protein
  • Sleep and hydration
  • Daily routines that don’t rely on chaos

Regulation creates safety. Safety creates capacity.

2. Identify Where Resentment Is Hiding

Ask yourself:

  • Where do I feel unsupported or unheard?
  • Where am I overextending without speaking up?
  • Where am I disappointed but silent?

Awareness is the first step toward healing.

3. Return to Your Identity in Christ

Attraction flows from identity.
Identity flows from alignment.
Alignment flows from surrender.

God doesn’t ask you to push harder—He asks you to steward your body, emotions, and covenant with honesty and compassion.

Desire Needs Safety, Energy, and Softness

Desire is not something you force.
It is the fruit of regulation, safety, and alignment.

If your nervous system is fried, your emotions unprocessed, and your spiritual grounding shaky, a

Your Desire Is Not Dead

Let me be clear:

  • Your marriage is not doomed
  • You didn’t make the wrong choice
  • Your spark isn’t gone forever

Your body is asking for support—not shame.

Romance novels, comparison, and fantasy won’t heal depletion.
Alignment will.

And if this conversation stirred something in you, that’s not condemnation—that’s clarity.
And clarity is mercy.
