I Hate That My Husband Touches Me When I Feel This Gross: Shame, Sex, and a Way Forward

There’s a sentence I’ve heard in my clinic more than once: “I hate that my husband touches me when I feel this gross.”
If that lands in your gut, you’re not alone.

This is for the woman who loves her husband, wants intimacy, and also recoils because she can’t stand her own skin. It’s for the woman who avoids mirrors, keeps her shirt on during intimacy, and prays he won’t stop asking altogether. It’s for the single woman who thinks, “Who would ever want this body?”

We’re going there—with truth, Scripture, and a path forward.

What’s Really Going On (And Why It’s Not Just “Willpower”)

When you feel “gross,” your body and brain are flooded with stress chemistry. That shame doesn’t stay in a corner; it spills into everything—sleep, cravings, hormones, blood sugar, inflammation, blood pressure, mood. It also eats away at connection. Shame isolates. Intimacy requires safety.

You can’t hate yourself into wholeness. Punishment and restriction reinforce shame while nourishment and truth restore safety.

The Spiritual Weight We Don’t Name

Sex isn’t just a physical “nice to have.” God designed it as covenant glue. Scripture is clear:

“Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time… then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” (1 Corinthians 7:5, ESV)

This is not about forced intimacy; it’s about mutual devotion. When shame makes you hide, the enemy wins the easiest battle—division. If he can keep you fixated on cellulite, cravings, and failure, he can hijack your marriage, motherhood, and mission.

Shame is a spiritual attack dressed up as a body image problem.

How Being Disconnected with Your Health Creates Disconnection in Marriage

Neglecting your health doesn’t only cost you energy; it costs you connection. Chronic stress, dysregulated blood sugar, and hormonal chaos can make desire feel impossible. When distance becomes habit, guilt cements the pattern.

This isn’t a scolding. It’s a reminder: stewardship is discipleship. Your body is the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. Caring for it is worship—not vanity.

Three Steps to Start Healing Today

1) Break the Agreements—Out Loud

Identify the lies you’ve been living under and renounce them audibly.

Say this:

  • I renounce the lie that I am disgusting and unwanted.
  • I am made in the image of God, and with Him I can heal.

What stays hidden stays in control. Bring it into the light.

2) Nourish—Don’t Punish

Skip the 21-day punishments and start with consistent, doable stewardship:

  • Hydration: Half your bodyweight (in ounces) of distilled water daily (up to 1 gallon), with a pinch of Redmond Real Salt or French grey sea salt.
  • Protein-Forward Meals x3: Build plates around quality protein to stabilize blood sugar and appetite.
  • Light & Movement: 10 minutes of outdoor light on your face daily; 10–20 minute after-dinner walk to support glucose balance.
  • Repeat tomorrow. Daily direction beats 30-day extremes.

This is the heart of my Roadmap to Health inside the Wilderness of Wellness: simple foundations, stacked consistently.

Consistency is kinder—and more powerful—than any crash plan.

3) Get in Community That Won’t Let You Quit

Shame thrives in isolation. Healing multiplies in sisterhood.

Borrow strength until your own is steady.

A Word to Your Heart

I’ve cried in the shower. I’ve faked confidence. I’ve avoided my husband’s eyes. I’ve told myself I wasn’t worth the way he looked at me. Hear me:

You are not gross. You are not beyond repair. You are not alone.
God doesn’t want you numbed out and hidden. He wants you whole—and He gave you a path to start today.
